Joanne has been breathing on her own for the last half an hour for the first time since she came to the hospital. She is still on a vent to keep her airway open but the breathing is all her. The really good news is that she might be able to avoid a tracheostomy. That would be huge because it would mean that when the time is right she would be able to talk. With a trach in she wouldn't be able to. Totally open to however the doctors lead but praying that she will be able to go trach free!
I got a hand squeeze today when I came in this morning and she was also able to give a thumbs up. Hasn't opened her eyes this morning and I think she might actually be sleeping now. She will still have sleep and wake cycles even though she appears to be asleep all the time. Both legs have moved this morning as well. All great stuff!
Gran is sitting at Joanne's bedside reading to her from a favorite devotional. It is so cool to know that she can hear us now! Jon is our nurse again today which is great. He has been with her for the most part from the first day she came to ICU. Although Erin and Jessica were with her for a few days over the weekend and she got a lot of TLC from them. She got her hair washed and looks great and I know she's got to be feeling better. I still can't tell you how amazing the staff has been.
